Severino out for 2020

After many tests, Luis Severino ended up needing Tommy John Surgery. This sucks for the Yankees. No doubt. Although, Severino not being in the rotation for 2020 is a HUGE loss, it’s not the end of the world. He will be out until sometime in 2021 and hopefully back to the pitcher we all expect. It may not look great but it was better they found this now than later in the season.

So who takes the spot now? Well, with Paxton also out until May/June, you have Montgomery, Green, Cessa, Loaisiga, King, or possibly Garcia filling in the role. Domingo German doesn’t return from his suspension until June and to be honest, I don’t think you can really count on him to be in mid-season form since he wouldn’t have any proper spring training. His addition could still help the bullpen in an opener type of role but I don’t see him being stretched out as a starter immediately when he returns.

Now, I know you are probably thinking “why didn’t they do the MRI contrast earlier?” Well, according to Cashman even if they did it in December, the doctors would have recommended to try to treat it before getting the surgery since it’s a partial tear. If surgery was eventually needed, I think it would have been around this time anyway. Severino would still be missing all of 2020.

The rotation now looks like Cole, Tanaka, Happ, TBD, and TBD. The bullpen may be heavily relied on again which Yankees fans know how that turned out last October. Right now, we have to just hope that everyone remains healthy and the “Next man up” mentality from last year continues in 2020.
